I’ve been trying to do this forever. Now I have some real motivation. I want to get out of California and move to Maine. I want to have my debt mostly gone before I do so. I’m going to start getting student loans, which will drop my interest rate immensely for whatever debts I pay off with it. As far as all of my other debt, I want it gone as fast as possible. I made a chart with all of my current debt, which amounts to about $18,000, not including my car. I made a chart for up to $20,000. As I pay off each $100, I’ll x off the box representing it. That means 200 x’s. It would take me over 8 years to pay off $20,000 if I pay off only $100 a month, which would obviously cost more than $100 a month due to interest. I currently have 19 x’s. My first short term goal will be to reach 25 x’s by the end of the year.

Five cards are now paid off 4 months ago

I paid off the little bit of interest that was charged on a few of them today. I’m down to two now.

Four cards have been paid off 5 months ago

Once the rest of the check clears, I’ll pay off a fifth. Then it’s time to focus on paying off the loan.

In six days, my loan check will clear. 5 months ago

Then I’ll be paying off five of my credit cards and a portion of the remaining two. This’ll cause my total debt to go up to start with, but then I’ll have four less monthly bills and I can focus on what I’m paying off better. Plus, you can’t keep running a personal loan up to the limit, so it can only go down!

I had paid off my HSBC credit card, then I used it to go to Vegas for my anniversary, which was totally worth it. Now I’m focusing on paying off the Zales card instead, since I won’t ever drive that one back up.
