I’ve really let this one go by the wayside. I’ve got the resources, though (I’ve got a digital ton of resources); so I’m going to sit down at home tonight and hammer out a good plan of attack so that I can at least be trucking along toward mastering this goal by this time next year. Ooo-hah!
er… I mean utinni.

Here are a few URLs to help anyone trying to do this on their own (or anyone else for that matter!):
Japanese Online – a pretty nice community for people interested in the Japanese Language, Culture and other things.
Slime Forest – this is awesome. It’s a free video game (I’ve had it on my PC for a month with no problems). It’s a simple RPG that uses Kana and Kanji in the combat/magic system – I’ve found that the repetition and memorization needed are extremely usefull (I just wish there was a way to back up a little when the game gets ahead of you… if you’re just starting, you might want to turn the learning speed down a little).
Fujiko’s Nihongo Page – has both Kana and Grades 1-6 Kanji organized according to Grade. Nicely done.
I’m using these, Pimsleur and the Rosetta Stone (which I’m enjoying a lot); and I’m coming along nicely. It’s a shame that I speak more Japanese now than I did when I lived there. :((
