How? Where? When? 2 years ago

I don’t even know where to start. I know of a couple places in town that rent them out, but I need someone to teach me… Is it best to take a class, or learn from a friend? There are a couple huge lakes here that I’d love to explore, and the Sound is right here also, I’d love to do some island hopping… I tend to get ahead of myself. Does anyone have advice on where to start with this??
