Ok so i’ve not read all of them, about 40 i reckon (just by chance!), but i have to say some of these books aren’t really worth it! Anna Karenina is very dull – Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert (similar sort of thing) is much better and there’s a lot less of it to get through. Gormenghast is great however, knocks the socks off Lord of the Rings – as does the Dark Materials to Harry Potter, Narnia and Artemis Fowl. Narnia in particular is an odious project, basically a rewriting of the Bible, just page after page of dogmatic twaddle. So Just be selective is the answer I suppose! Totally and utterly recommend Love in the Time of Cholera though, love it, similarly To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, The Secret Garden, A Town Like Alice – and anything by Roald Dahl!
