My mom forced us to take piano lessons when we were younger. While I really appreciate her good intentions (I do!), it’s not surprising that I don’t play keyboards. The teaching methods just weren’t oriented towards really learning. I began to plunk things out by ear and pretend I was reading. I can count up the staves and figure out what note I’m looking at but it’s a slow, painful process.
While I’ve gone pretty far as a vocalist without being able to sight-read, I’m a big fan of Kurt Weill and would be able to learn his unrecorded material if I could read it.
I’d like to return to learning the piano as well.
