the other summer...

a few summers ago (these things always seem to happen for me in the summer) i was sitting on a tarp at the calgary folk music festival. enjoying the evening. enjoying my friends. enjoying the green onion cakes. daniel lanois got on stage. solo. he and his pedal steel. i was swept and floating. i don’t remember clearly what it was that i heard. i remember reaching my hand to my face and feeling tears. at that point i remember thinking i would like to learn how to play that instrument.
