1. Face forward in a fighting stance: one leg ahead of the other, the body turned to the side at the hips. Stand on the balls of your feet.
2. Prepare to block by making both hands into fists. Your forward arm should be bent, ready to guard your face, shoulder and ribs. Your back arm should be guarding your chest.
3. Wait for the attacker to strike. Swing your forward arm across your body to deflect the strike away from its intended target. Use your forearm as the blocking surface. Keep your arms close to your body; do not overextend. Let the opponent come to you.
4. Once the opponent’s strike has been blocked, follow up with a strike or a lock using your back hand and/or arm.
