identify birds from their songs and calls

Up until the age of eleven, before we moved house and things started to go all wrong, I was a bit of a twitcher. Spare time was spent out on the marshes by the river or in the woods with my friend Sarah Bailey. We shared my binoculars and my Spotters Guide books.
I can still identify the more obvious sounds of some blackbird calls, robins, curlews,seagulls, crows,mallard ducks, geese, coots, wood pigeons, cuckoos, chaffinches, parrots, night-jars and some owls but I hear a lot more than I can put a beak to.
