1/14 – I learned about G6PD. I had a patient that accidentally ate fava beans. You’re not supposed to eat those if you have G6PD. I also learned that fava beans are also called broad beans.

1/15 – I learned the names of a lot of new people today. I met the 18 new nurses that we just hired and spent some time talking to most of them. I remember most of their names too!

yesterday and today 2 years ago

12/8/07 – I learned that A is going to school to be an x-ray tech next year. I’m so proud of him!
12/9/07 – Today I learned that the same angel (Gabrielle) visited Mary and Elizabeth to tell them about their future babies! I didn’t realize it was the same angel. Just something I never noticed before!

A little confusing 2 years ago

11/29/07 – I learned that the charge nurse position that is open now is going to be on night shift. I also learned that one of the day shift charge nurses may want to go back to nights, therefore leaving a day shift position (that I want). Even if I have to start out on nights that okay, but there is a possibility of 2 other day shift charge positions opening up in the near future. Kind of confusing. I’m just going to apply for whatever is available and hope I can go back to day shift as soon as possible.

Thompson sign 2 years ago

11/28/07 – Well, I learned a lot while I was studying for the CEN today. One thing was Thompson sign. This is to check for rupture of the achilles tendon. First, you kneel on a chair and let your feet dangle off of the edge. Squeeze your calf and your foot should flex a little bit. This is because your achilles tendon is intact. If the foot does not move it is a positive Thompson sign and the achilles tendon is ruptured. I know that no one else cares, but it’s interesting to me! Plus it may be on my test next week.

11/27/07 – I learned that it is going to be way more expensive to have my husband’s car fixed than we thought it would be. This made me very grateful for my husband’s relatively new job and the pay raise that I recently got.

11/28/07 – I learned today….well, not much yet. I’m about to go study for the CEN exam, so I’ll let you know what I learn from that!

Assistant manager 2 years ago

11/26/07 – Today I learned that S, one of our assistant managers agrees that I would be a good charge nurse in our department. That’s really good since we don’t have a manager right now and she is pretty much our temporary manager until another one is hired!

behind again 2 years ago

11/24/07 – I learned a lot about carbon monoxide poisoning. Most of that is probably pretty boring to everyone except me. I will tell you one interesting fact though. Smokers have a carbon monoxide level of 10-15 (normal is <1). We had 2 patients who both had to be observed and on oxygen masks for most of the day with levels of 13 and 17. That just shows that you should all quit smoking!

11/25/07 – I learned today that I should take Succinocholine with me when I am running to help in a code in the hospital. This is an important drug to have and it is not in the crash carts because it has to be refrigerated. Good to know….and now I do.

Ok, I need to catch up here... 2 years ago

11/20 – I learned that our hospital pharmacy does not stock Nasacort nasal spray. Not really a big deal, but it took us a long time to figure this out! Next time I’ll know.

11/21 – I learned once again that you can not make everyone happy. I was in a position of a little bit of authority at work. Everyone just gets mad when you ask them to do something. It’s very frustrating!!!

11/22 – I learned how much Thanksgiving at my parents’ house really means to me. My husband and I were not able to visit my parents like we normally do. I didn’t think it would be a big deal, but it really was! I was soooo sad. I am very thankful for my family!

11/23 – I learned that shopping on Black Friday is insane. Why do people do it???

cyanide 2 years ago

I learned today that when taking care of a patient with smoke inhalation injuries, I should not only be concerned about carbon monoxide, but also cyanide. I also learned that the treatment for cyanide poisoning turns the patient beet red.

friends' college plans 2 years ago

Today I talked to E and M about their plans for college. I learned that E has decided where she is going to go. M is still not sure, but she wants to be nurse…like me! I was really excited to hear that.
