we read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” for my last book club. well, i read a third of it. but it was enough to inspire me to walk to the local farmers’ market this weekend and get some fresh produce. i have tended to buy crappy produce at the mega-market and accidentally let it go bad…mostly because it wasn’t that good to begin with. i made a delicious sesame tofu recipe (first time successfully cooking tofu!) that i found on the whole foods web site and added some lovely local green beans. i also got some basil and made my first attempt at pesto. it was ok. i need to work on the ratios. have no idea what it needed more or less of, but it was not nearly as good as the already-made packages the woman who sold me the basil was selling for $7. i wonder if she’ll share her secret. if anyone has any pesto-making tips, please share. or any relatively easy recipes involving new england summer produce…

i had my first (sort of) lesson on wednesday. i made a bowl. i don’t know how i did it. there is a lot of technique involved that i have no grasp of yet. my second attempt was a horrible failure. i think i did better when i allowed myself to be clueless and just go with it. but i made a bowl. that’s pretty rad.
so for the past few months my hobby has been “thinking,” apparently. i think and think and think. which leads to worrying about silly things that should not be worried about. i’ve decided that i need a tangible hobby, preferably involving other people who can motivate me to not blow it off to watch tv. i do lots of stuff, but nothing in an organized environment that i’ve had to really commit to. i mean, you can read whenever you want. i recently asked a friend of mine who sculpts to give me a pottery lesson. i am pretty comfortable with the fact that i cannot draw, but i do have an artistic eye and think this medium could be interesting.
the other one i am considering is roller derby…but i am scared. i don’t really want to be pushed to the cement. but it is probably the only team sport i could ever legitimately participate in as my hand eye coordination is terrible.
anyone have any really fantastic hobbies (that do not involve civil war re-enactments)to recommend?
