grow an herb garden

Our new kitchen gets a lot of light on the rare occasions we open the blinds. I’m still going to use my herb cage and the pretty pots. Bow I just need to get down to the farmers’ market to buy my plants.

At the farmer’s market, I bought curry, rosemary, and cilantro.

The rosemary developed a white, powdery mold. I didn’t get around to doing the baking-soda treatment, so I chucked it & will try again.

The cilantro died a mysterious death. I will get two next time, leaving one outside and one inside as an experiment.

The curry in ricking the cage. It is thriving in the cage despite my constant pinching of its sprigs. It’s got a completely different flavor than the seed, kinda like a mellow version of rosemary. I lourve it!

I thought there would be enough light coming in through the windows, but it does’t seem that is the case. I will wait to plant until next spring. I’ve alread bought the seeds, too!

to buy the seeds. Despite finding the perfect birdcage for the project, I will have to wait until fundage comes in. But I did buy: Cilantro, Basil, Thyme, and Basil.

It’s actually a big iron birdcage with legs. It’s about 2 feet on a side and opens at the top. It’s more than I was planning on spending, but I think it’ll be worth it. I found some very earthy clay containers. I can fit four with saucers in the cage. Now I need to go home and measure the space by the window.

With a little rearranging in the library and the purchase of a stand to put the container on, I can plant my herb garden indoors, which spares me the grief of waiting until next spring. I am going to Old Time Pottery to look for a stand. How romantic to have an herb garden in the library!

I keep saying I’m going to do this. It will have to be the small container variety. I have a lovely little deck on which to put it. I hope it will get me cooking more, also.
