You can have a lot of shared history with someone, but if you’re continuing the relationship out of inertia, it might be time to evaluate what you still get out of it. There’s someone who’s important to me but in some ways the friendship is diminished—by age, by mutual changes. We no longer just get together like we used to. Geography makes it more difficult. But e-mail and other connections aren’t filling the gap. I think for both our sake I need to just cut this cord, but nine years … boy.
Just contemplating the break gives me unexpected clarity.
