This week, we were asked to write 300 words in Japanese about ‘my Saturday’. So… with melted brain, here’s my essay…

私の土曜日

先週にとても忙しかったでいますから土曜日におそくおきました。九時十五分にさめりました。それから十時十五分まで私の好きな本を読んで、私の彼女といっしょには話して、こ茶を飲んでいました。

十時十五分に私達はおきて、風呂場に行きました。私のきれいな庭が見えますから毎日の朝に風呂場のまどの外に見ます。日本の庭に見える庭がしています。今まで庭に大きな石があります。石のそばに小さな木があります。石の上にタヌキほしいです。かわいいだと思います。

十時半から十一時二十分まで日本語を勉強していました。むずかしくてとても面白いです。私の彼女も日本語を勉強します。彼女は漢字が４０つごろ分かりますから上手ですね？彼女は十一時十五分に「日本語は楽しいが今疲れた」と言いました。「今日の午後にあなたの兄さんにほうもんしましょう」。私は、「ええ～！いいです！」と言いました。それから私の兄に電話しました。

私の兄はヨークに住んでいます。私はヨークの大学で勉強しましたから市が大好きです。朝ご飯を食べて車で旅行していました。旅行はやさしかったです。二時十分前にヨークにつきました。イギリスの北にありますからあそこにはちょっとさむいです。私達はぼしとうわぎとてぶくろを着て市の中に行きました。着物がたくさん着ていましたでも風が強くふくと私のはながさむすぎました。今でも私のはながちょっと赤いです！

私と彼女と兄といっしょにパブにビールを飲むに行きました。音楽はにじやかでとてもうるさかったと話すを聞けませんでしたから私達はたくさんおどっていました。楽しかったです。

I think it’s full of errors, but I did it!

I have a Japanese reader which I picked up many many years ago and have always read a little then put it back on the shelf due to the amount of time it takes to look up each Kanji.

Well, last night, I picked it up and saw 午前五時半、 and immediately understood “5:30am”. That’s a row of FIVE kanji, previously a massively intimidating prospect… but with the amount of study I’ve done, it was easy.

I think it’s getting there.

I started my GCSE course last week – an interesting mix… one chap I did year two with a few years back, someone who lived in Japan 10 years ago, and a couple of complete beginners amongst the 12 or so on the course.

I think I’ll struggle to attain a GCSE in only 60 hours of teaching, so I can’t begin to think how hard it’ll be for the new starters.

Earlier today, I watched Spirited Away in Japanese with no subtitles. Picked up a little of the language, but most of it was too quick, mumbled or slangy.

The local college is offering a GCSE course in Japanese. I shall take it!

Japanese hurts my head too much. I’m going to take a break.

...how would I go about saying ‘probably’... I’ll give an example:

Often when speaking Japanese, I throw in a Finnish word…

ikkuna no uchi ni ha ki ni arimasu
イックナの内には木にあります

“outside the window there is a tree”

To which the response is “ikkuna?”

I’d like to be able to say, “Sorry… that’s probably a Finnish word”... but my phrases:

“sumimasen, finrandogo no tango desu ne!”
すみません、フィンランド語の単語ですね！
or
“sumimasen, finrandogo no tango desu yo!”
すみません、フィンランド語の単語ですよ！

...have too much certainty. How do I go about expressing uncertainty that “ah, sorry, I guess that’s probably a Finnish word?”

Any clues?

質問があります。

「水道の水をためる」の動詞を分かりません。英語で「collect/save」ですけど銀行に水をためれませんね？貯金箱に水をためれません。

英語で「ためる」を何と言いますか。

Since asking the question yesterday, I realised I need some ‘meta’ Japanese… words for asking about Japanese…

助詞 じょし joshi – particle
名詞 めいし　meishi – noun
言葉 ことば kotoba – word
動詞 どうし doushi – verb

...so I’ve added them to my flashcards.

日本語で「the book that I am reading」と言いたいです。何と言いますか。「私は読んでいる本」はいいですか。次の助詞は「は」ですから「私は・・・」はよくないと思います。「私が」もよくないと思います。
