It helps in getting quickly started with Rails. I have now moved on to other books and reading more about Rails in the blogosphere.
Surendra Singhi has written 3 entries about this goal
After reading the first part. The best way to use this book is develop an application, while going back to the book as the need to understand something arises.
Already there is so much new stuff in Edge rails, that many of the material in this book is nearing obsolence.
Instead of writing sql to create tables, learn about migrations. Also, the way of doing testing has changed. For AJAX now there is RJS, etc.
I am really impressed with the rails framework, it makes web development very easy. Also, the agile web development with rails is an extremely good introduction to rails, the first part of the book walks the reader through an example, and the second part then explains the framework. It is an ideal book for people like me who enjoy learning by exploring and trying out the code.
