I like thinking of this as a “problem”. I receive so many gifts each Christmas that it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all. I’m blessed, but it would be nice to show more gratitude.

What makes it worse is that my family, especially, are notorious thank-you-noters. I was once witness to an actual, honest-to-God, thank you note bought and sent for a thank you note that had been sent in response to a thank you note given by the original sender! Not sending anything is making me somewhat of a black sheep, methinks.

Some of the tips I’ve been given to keep track of it all:

1. Keep the tags with the gift.
No can do. Too many gifts are given without tags; they’re just handed to me by the giver.

2. Keep a notebook of who gives what.
Most of the gifts are given at parties where it would be embarrassing to sit there and write down detailed notes on what everybody gave me. It sends a message all right, but not “I’m thankful.”

3. Well, then, write it down afterwards.
Did I mention I have a large family? Plus, by the time most holiday parties are over, it’s very very dark.

4. Ask your notorious family members how they do it.
“If you have to ask, you’re not grateful enough.” I think they like having a black sheep; it makes them feel good about themselves.
