I have met people surviving cancer on several occasions recently. One of them was wearing a headscarf and so it was obvious that she was recovering, but I spent an hour in a group with her and no one mentioned it at all. It was like the elephant in the room. Finally, I just got talking to her and asked, What kind do you have? She seemed relieved to have her condition acknowleged. She has had breast cancer, metestatis and brain involvement, but is getting aggressive treatment and feels optimistic. You could tell from the sparkle in her eyes. I felt honored to meet her. It takes so much guts to be optimistic in the middle of illness.
