Cashing in on the American Dream: Retire at 35

That is REALLY young. I have a friend who retired at 29 but the way he got the money was his business started doing really well. After travelling for 6 months he started working there again, proving the theory that most of us don’t want to stop working we just want to have some choice about for whom, when, how much and so on.

Anyway, this book was published in 1988 and is out of print, but I might try to order it up through my library just to see if there are any nuggets in there.

Setting a number 3 years ago

I think that I am going to declare “young” to be 40 for the purpose of this goal.
There is a new book out called “The Number” and it’s all about what different people think they need to retire. If I aim to retire by age 40, that’s one number, but the other number is how much money I will need to make this happen…
So much of it is about controlling expenses too. For me, if I can live on a reasonable income, then early retirement not only looks possible, it looks easy. But if I start to spend more then it’s a double whammy of saving less and needing more to maintain my lifestyle.
