Okay, I’m nowhere near mastery at this point, but I have gotten started and am reasonably comfortable with both KDE and Gnome. Getting into the deeper stuff is a little tougher.
Out of curiosity, does anyone have any insight on getting Linux installed on a Compaq Presario 1200 (12XL410) craptop? I’ve successfully installed (a default setup of) Red Hat 9 without a kernel panic (not so with SuSE!), but I get a black screen at boot. The CMOS setup on this model is seriously stripped down – the best I can do with the shared video RAM is set it to 2, 4, or 8 MB (that’s it – there are a whopping three changeable settings in the CMOS). If I boot to a Knoppix live disk, everything works seamlessly. What gives?
