Help myself through helping others 4 years ago

I’ve always wanted to be active in my community, coming up with ideas to clean up litter and help the elderly in my neighborhood, but I have never put these ideas to action. I recently checked into my area Habitat for Humanity and sent them an email but they never got back to me. I guess they don’t need me. Other options are to apply to the Peace Corps, serving food at shelters, mentoring, retirement homes…any other suggestions?
