backpack around the world

This goal might be on here a while. I’ve got a significant commitment in the military after university, and I haven’t even graduated there yet. Plus I want to go sailing in some tropical seas and get some sort of advanced degree at some point…yeesh. This might be one of those “Well, I’m retired, now what?” goals. But we’ll see.

I think one of my goals has always been to see as much of the world as I can before I die. That said, I’ve done a fair bit of traveling- I’m a junior in college and I’ve been to Spain, the Virgin Islands, the Grand Canyon, Captiva Island, Mauritius, and Michigan/Canada. I love seeing how everyday life is different in each place, even if it is within the same country. Just one town or one city over, things can be completely changed from what they were when you began. Mauritius is definitely the farthest I’ve gone, but also the best traveling experience I’ve had. We stayed with a friend who is doing research there, and has been there for almost a year already, so we really got the inside track on where to go, what to do, and how to do it. I think it is way more fun if you try to do things the local way and live within the local culture, rather than stay at one of the super-resorts. Those are everywhere, and everywhere they are the same. You might as well stay wherever you were and just get a posh hotel room rather than bothering with the flight and everything to go to one somewhere else. I think it will take a few years to get ready but I’m going to do this. I will need some money, a map, and someone to travel with. I think I’ll start in England.
