French. I want to learn French. It sounds beautiful when spoken, and it is actually a useful language for travel in many of the places I want to go. Plus I think learning new languages helps you have a better appreciation of the world around you because you can describe it better because you have more concepts to think about. Also attempting to learn Gaelic, which is slightly more challenging than Spanish. I wish I knew someone who spoke it so I could practice with them. I feel silly repeating the tapes out loud over and over.

Do you remember when you were little and you were trying to learn how to read, and at first you had to read letter by letter, and then you realized that some letters together make sounds, and you could recognize the sounds, and that the sounds made words? And at first you didn’t know what all the words meant, but gradually you learned and you could see the whole word at once when you looked at it, rather than just the syllables? No? Me neither. That’s why I want to learn a language that doesn’t use this alphabet, so I can remember what it was like to learn how to speak, read, and think in a language.
Also, what’s the point of having all that neat stuff and awesome people out there who speak beautiful complex languages if you can’t understand it? Monolingual is for the weak.
