I was hoping to find some source to use for clear-cut genre definitions, and this is all I really found:
One of the problems with the grouping of music into genres is that it is a subjective process that has a lot to do with the individual’s personal understanding and way of listening to music.
I was keeping genre blank until I figured out what to do, but maybe I’ll just keep it blank forever. This is maddening.

So I’ve decided I want to add all the lyrics to my songs.
Also, I’m still not happy with genre tags. I deleted everything, but now I need to add genres that I want control over. Country, classical, audiobooks, and stand-up need to get tagged so I can exclude them from playlists.
I’m thinking about deleting the album name if I only have one song from the album, too. But maybe not. I don’t know.

The new iTunes has taken my obsessive tagging to all new levels. There’s this really cool new feature called Cover Flow which I’m really digging.
As cool as it is though, it’s also evil incarnate. As I flipped through my album art, much to my chagrin, some albums were showing up two or three times in a row. I had to go back and tag things that I thought were already tagged properly.
The most frequent correction I had to make was the Compilation tag. If one song on the album is tagged yes and the rest are tagged no, the song tagged yes shows up as a duplicate album. My OCD was not happy. Also, if a compilation isn’t tagged properly – say a soundtrack for example – it’s listed once for every artist.
The good news is the new feature makes it really easy to see what cover art you’re missing, and, as an added bonus, iTunes will now search for missing cover art! Imagine that. No more Amazon searches.

I just rated everything 5 stars. Accidentally. Now I have to rate all 5,000 of my songs over again.
(It might have been a sign from the college gods, as I’ve been putting off studying for two tests and tagging my mp3s instead.)
At least once I’ve done that I’ll be officially finished with this!

Okay, artist, album, year, track number, album art, and bpm are all officially tagged correctly. All I have left is genres, compolations, and composers.
Tagging actually helped me clean out my collection, too! I did my tagging manually, meaning I had to look at every song I have. I experienced some serious “Why the hell do I still have this?” moments.
Now I just have to bite the bullet and do genre tagging. I’ve been avoiding it. =/

I think this is a neverending process for me. I’m incredibly OCD. Just when I’ve tagged everything, I’ll decide I don’t like the way I did it. Then I delete my entire iTunes library and re-import it, bad tags and all.
I’m like one of those women who finally snags a handsome doctor and falls in love with him and then is driven to slowly but surely completely ruin the entire relationship. I need some kind of tag intervention.
