More progress 2 years ago

This is on the 3rd exchange. I received two rocks from BigDlittled. One is a very angular piece of light brown shale. The layering is visible along one edge, and one side (not visible in the pic) is stained or oxidized to a dark brown. It looks like a piece from one of those old wooden jigsaw puzzles for kids.

The other piece is very interesting. It’s hard ro see well from the picture, but it’s a very light green color. The dark circle was filled with sediment, and when I washed it out well all of that dark sediment came out and left sort of a half-sphere cavity. The rock itself is crystaline with a very distinct radiating pattern on the fractures. It looks familiar, but I can’t think of what it is. I’ll have to check further into it.

Thanks Dd! I’ll try to get yours sent out before vacation.

I now have one completed exchange, one that I’ve received but haven’t sent yet, and one that I’ve sent but haven’t received (but I will pick up in just 11 days! :) ).

Some progress :) 2 years ago

Today I sent the shipment of rocks for my second exchange to Surly Gurl. Some of these I had actually collected for her months ago, before I started this goal, because she had mentioned that she likes rocks.

Sooooo, as soon as I get one from her, the second exchange will be completed.

If you’d like, Surly, you can save one and give it to me in person 5 weeks from now :)

I guess that I never posted 2 years ago

about the second shipment of rocks that Wy sent. Sorry Wy, that was probably a month ago now.

She sent several pretty and interesting rocks and explained what she remembered of where they came from. Plus a picture from New Zealand, where she thinks that one of the rocks was collected.

I’ll keep an eye out for new rocks in my travels this year, Wy :) Thanks!

I FINALLY 2 years ago

got WyvernDust’s rocks sent today!! :)

1 completed exchange (assuming that the post office doesn’t lose it), 42 to go.

Oops 2 years ago

I neglected to mention the very nice card that I also received with the rock from WyvernDust, giving some background about where the rock came from.

Thanks again, Wy :)

My first rock 2 years ago

for this goal came from WyvernDust. As she already mentioned, it is a limestone, and there are a couple of fairly large calcite crystals in it.

This rock started as sea creatures (probably mostly tiny beasties) floating and swimming in fairly deep water in an ocean. As they died their remains (made of calcium minerals that they pulled out of the sea water) settled to the bottom. Over millions of years these pieces built up and were buried, where they were compacted and cemented together (that’s where the calcite crystals came from) until it became rock. Over time the area was uplifted and the ocean retreated. Erosion uncovered the overlying sediments and rock until the layer containing your rock was exposed.

And that’s basically how it ended up in your back yard :)

Thanks, Wy. I have yours collected, I just haven’t sent it yet.

Last weekend 2 years ago

I went to collect some rocks to send out for this goal.

I went to 3 different locations and collected a couple of pockets full. That should last for a while :)

Here’s a photo of the location where I collected most of them- in Clear Creek Canyon, west of Golden, CO.

This goal 3 years ago

was inspired by girlinthecurl with her thread here.

I’m looking for anything representative of where you live. Doesn’t have to be beautiful, just a rock from your area. A short story to go along with it would be great- where you found it, why you like it, whatever. I will be glad to send one in exchange.

Please contact me at rockhoundtg@att.net if you are interested :)
