back to the future 2 was on tv two nights ago. i know it’s not actually part of building a time machine, but it counts as research, right?
the shitty thing is that, for some reason, i had never really thought about whether the storyline (aside from the time-travel aspect) was plausible or not until now. i just loved the movies. while watching it the other day, i realized that the entire last half of the trilogy is totally impossible.
explanation: when doc brown and marty are in the future and biff steals the time machine to go back and give himself the sports almanac, they realize they’ve returned to an “alternate 1985”. marty meets doc in his lab where this point is explained.
while watching that scene this time i realized that they would not be able to return to the alternate 1985 or any other time because as soon as biff stole the delorean in 2015 he changed the course of history, and would not have been able to return to that future to put the car back. doc and marty would be stuck, and the future would change around them accordingly. they would find themselves suddenly standing in the future 2015 that came from the alternate 1985.
just a thought.
