I watched the movie The Secret of Kells and researched this.
Taken from the Wikipedia page:
The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier.
The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colours, enliven the manuscript’s pages. Many of these minor decorative elements are imbued with Christian symbolism and so further emphasise the themes of the major illustrations.
I always thought this Amazonian berry was pronounced (ah-ky) but I learned today it is pronounced (ah-sigh-ee).
Cocoa is not easy to grow, must be gathered manually, and takes years for the plant to mature. Also cocoa mostly depends on child slave labor. Makes you think twice about eating that Hershey Bar. There might not be one soon.
While I was working on my goal of donating rice to fight world hunger via freerice.com, I did the subject of World Capitals. I learned some new ones, including a few to countries I thought I knew the capitals for (such as Australia and South Africa.)
The capital of Australia is actually Canberra, not Sydney.
The capital of Switzerland is actually Bern, not Zurich.
South Africa has three capitals:
Cape Town (legislative)
...none of which are Johannesburg- haha.
The capital of Colombia is Bogota.
The capital of Laos is Vientiane.
The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz.
And the capital of Morocco is Rabat.
In Taiwan there is a taboo delicacy of eating a bull’s penis. It is said to work like Viagra. They said it tasted like beef.
In Ireland during the month of February some Icelanders eat delicacies that connect them to their Viking heritage, including poisoned, rotting shark.
My boyfriend told me about this-
Payola, in the American music industry, is the illegal practice of payment or other inducement by record companies for the broadcast of recordings on music radio, in which the song is presented as being part of the normal day’s broadcast. It was practiced a lot in the 1950s.
