legally change my name

I’ve gathered all the required information, filled out the forms, and put ‘em in an envelope (along with the required fee).

Now it’s all up to the government staffers who process these requests.

Assuming that they don’t decide that they need more information, or don’t like my reason for wanting the name change, then I ought to have the certificate in hand in 6 weeks’ time.

I have the forms (okay, I’ve had them since last summer), and they’re all filled out.

I thought I could go to the name-change office personally while I’m off work next week. The office used to be here in Toronto, and it was possible to get same-day (or at least same-week) turnaround by showing up first thing in the morning prepared to wait in line for a while. (I know this because several friends went through the process.)

It now turns out that the office has been moved to a Northern Ontario city. The application must be mailed, and there’s a waiting time of 6 to 8 weeks if they don’t decide that they need more information.

Sure hope I don’t get ill or get hit by a bus during that time, because I will have no provincial health coverage.

Possibly the scariest situation procrastinating has ever landed me in.
