I've Had It With 43Things 2 years ago

The Robots have gone too far this time. Sure they’ve made some cool improvements, but now they have turned 43Things into a police state where speaking out on topics that they deem to be inappropriate are now verboten. Worse still, they’ve created a breeding ground for informants to perform a George Orwellian Big Brother “Neighborhood Watch” where you can rat out people you suspect of being anti-establishment. Sure being anorexic isn’t for everyone, but if that 400 pound troll wants to work at losing 300 pounds until she can walk the runway with the other anorexic waifs then more power to her!

I mean who are they to decide what is and isn’t obscene when the U.S. Supreme Court can’t come to a consensus in this global economy? What may be obscene in Athens, Georgia may not be obscene in Athens, Greece. Who cares if someone wants to have sex with sheep to maintain their virginity until marriage, unless you’re the sheep that’s about to be diddled?

So fie on the Robots, a vex upon you and your faulty code and logic. (Well, except for Ivan. He’s never had faulty logic, and has fixed the other Robots bad code. And I guess Laurel because she’s just a token female.)

Apologies in advance to those of you who will mourn the loss of my 35K+ cheers that will soon be taken from your accounts since the Robots didn’t program it so that you retain the cheers of those people who leave the site. This will probably drop Des, Dwlt, BananaPancakes, YRush, Deni H and others back down below their latest cheer landmark, so they’ll be able to cheer it again. I’ll be out of here by midnight, and the only thing that would make me reconsider is if a Robot gave me the key to the cheer machine, but we all know that isn’t going to happen.

Farewell all of you, and give my regards to Aprile Pazzo.

What Do You Think About This? 2 years ago

The following news article pushes some buttons with me. I know in my state there are laws that say if there are four or more women living in a residence together it is considered an illegal brothel. These kinds of laws are rarely enforced but can come up to be used to persecute individuals unfairly.

Lawmaker: Anti-Cohabitation Law Wrong

By DALE WETZEL

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — In North Dakota, a man and woman who live together without being married are committing a sex crime. It’s right there in the law, a state senator says, alongside the prohibitions against adultery, incest and indecent exposure.

Tracy Potter, a freshman Democrat from Bismarck, is asking the state Legislature to end North Dakota’s status as one of seven states that have anti-cohabitation laws on the books. It has rejected three such attempts since 1990.

“Mark Twain expressed a simple view of people’s personal relationships with government … that I think government should adopt. That is, I don’t care what you do, as long as you don’t scare the horses,” Potter said Wednesday during a North Dakota Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his repeal measure.

In North Dakota, census data indicate at least 23,000 of the state’s 642,000 residents are living together as opposite-sex partners.

The state has prohibited opposite-sex couples from living “openly and notoriously” as if they were married since North Dakota became a state in 1889. Florida, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia have similar laws.

Attorneys say North Dakota’s law has never been vigorously enforced. There is only one North Dakota Supreme Court decision on the subject, a 1938 case in which the justices upheld the cohabitation convictions of a man and woman who had been living together in the back of their secondhand store.

“If we mean to enforce this law, we’ll need a $10 billion prison,” Potter said. “We really don’t want to enforce the law, and if we don’t mean to enforce it, it’s an insult to law enforcement to keep it on the books.”

But state lawmakers did endorse a law six years ago allowing landlords to refuse to rent to opposite-sex couples who were not married.

In West Virginia, a former prison inmate is challenging the state’s anti-cohabitation law because it delayed his parole from prison on forgery convictions. Officials rejected William Stanley’s plan to move in with his fiancee after his release.

Last September, a North Carolina judge ruled the state’s law was unconstitutional, in a lawsuit filed by a woman who lost her job as a county sheriff’s dispatcher because she was living with her boyfriend. The decision was not appealed.

Kent Willis, director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, said his state’s anti-cohabitation law does not often prompt lawsuits, because it is rarely enforced.

In one case, a Norfolk, Va., day care operator faced losing her license because she was living with her boyfriend, but the Virginia Department of Social Services renewed the license when the ACLU agreed to represent her, Willis said.

“It may have a more significant impact than we know,” Willis said. “I can’t tell you about how many times the law is invoked and used, but that individuals don’t challenge the application of it.”

Tom Freier, a spokesman for the North Dakota Family Alliance, said repealing North Dakota’s anti-cohabitation law would signal that the state doesn’t value marriage and the societal benefits it brings.

“If we look at the research, social science evidence suggests that living together is not a good way to prepare for marriage, or to avoid divorce,” Freier said. “Cohabitating is not positive for the family, and poses a special risk for women and children.”

Post Awful 3 years ago

So last Monday I went to the post office like I do every day, and mailed out a flat rate priority mail envelope with delivery confirmation on it. Inside was a Christmas card, a check, a magnet, a pen and a DVD. From Pennsylvania to Missouri it should have taken two days to get there, three tops. I heard from the recipient on Thursday that it still wasn’t there, so I talked to my post office. They said if it didn’t arrive on Friday to file a tracking notice on Saturday. They indicated that they had heard from other people who had sent priority mail on Monday afternoon that they hadn’t arrived either.

The package didn’t arrive on Friday, and as of this morning it still has not arrived. I called the post office in Missouri and they checked and confirmed that they had not received it. So today I sent a replacement via Express Mail, and filed the tracking form. I’d also yesterday tried calling to talk to someone, but the phone listed on the internet as having agents was a completely automated system that never lets you talk to anyone. So I filed an email complaint including a complaint about that.

Needless to say I’m pissed. I’d paid $4.55 to have the first package arrive in 2-3 days and now it’s been 5 and it still isn’t there. And now I’ve paid $14.40 for Express Mail which won’t be delivered until Monday which is the two days that the $4.55 should’ve gotten me in the first place.

Advice Needed 3 years ago

Okay, so I came home today and walked into the bathroom. I noticed the water in my toilet was yellow and I was thinking that there must be rust in the water or something. I flushed and it flushed clean and then I noticed the magazine I was reading this morning was not where I’d left it. I looked around and it was gone. That’s when I realized that someone had been in my apartment. I knew there were workmen at the building today, but I thought they were working downstairs.

I called my landlady who said she was glad I called because she didn’t have my number at her home and she wanted to let me know that they were there to fix the roof today. (Last week she told me they were going to be there this past weekend, but when I got back in town they hadn’t been.) I told her about my toilet not being flushed, and that my magazine was missing. She indicated that the toilet was probably her dad, and suggested I look around for the magazine and that she’d replace it if I couldn’t find it.

So here’s my issue. It was a porn mag. Apparently the two guys working are her new boyfriend and her father. How should I address this with her? I mean what nerve they had to just take my magazine and think I wouldn’t notice. Then there’s the whole issue of what if they took something else that I didn’t notice right off? I checked upstairs where they were working and they’d knocked over a box of Christmas cards which they just left on the floor in disarray.

I mean right now I’m pissed and feel violated. I want to confront the person who did it and and ask them what the hell they were thinking. And I want my magazine back.

At the same time, I don’t want to piss off my landlady because I don’t want her to kick me out.

They’ve got more work to do repairing the ceiling from the water damage from the leak they didn’t fix in a timely manner. How can I trust them in my apartment unescorted after this?

I’m looking for any feedback here. Tell me that I’m whack for getting worked up about a magazine. Tell me that I’m right to be pissed. Give me suggestions as to how to address it. Help.

Dave Cockrum Dead at 63 3 years ago

Dave Cockrum, artist, passed away this morning after a long illness. Dave is probably best known for his work on reviving the X-Men including the creations of Nightcrawler and Storm. I’ve been a fan of his work because of his earlier efforts on the Legion of Super-Heroes. He’d actually designed the two X-Men for a spin-off from Legion called The Outsiders. He’s also worked on The Avengers for Marvel. He created his own group “The Futurians” which was published as a graphic novel by Marvel, and then a series by Lodestone. He’s also worked for Valiant, Defiant, Broadway and Warren Publishing. He also created his own series “Soulsearchers and Company” for Claypool Comics. He is survived by his with Paty.

What's The Big Deal? 3 years ago

I can understand morals clauses, but I think this weatherman should not have been fired for the actions of another person. With stalkerazzi out there, anybody can get a picture of someone at any time, so unless the person is obviously posing for it and posts it themselves, how is this any different than the pictures of actors and actresses that are all over the internet and trash mags?

Here’s the story:

Va. TV Weatherman Fired Over Nude Photo
Friday, November 17, 2006 4:25 PM EST
The Associated Press

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — A TV weatherman was fired after his nude photo was posted on the Internet.

The NBC affiliate WSLS-TV fired meteorologist Jamey Singleton on Thursday after a frontal nude shot of him getting out of the shower was posted on someone else’s MySpace.com site.

Singleton, 28, who was retained earlier this year after admitting he was a recovering heroin addict, said he didn’t blame the station.

“What shocks and what offends — that’s really up to them,” Singleton told The Roanoke Times. “I can’t blame them if … after everything that’s happened they said, ‘That’s the straw that broke the camel’s back.’”

Singleton said the photo was taken a few months ago by a former friend who posted it Tuesday. He said he notified MySpace when he heard it was posted and the picture was removed within an hour, but it had already been e-mailed to several of his co-workers, including Moreland.

humour on

So I stayed up tonight just to watch Gerard and Mikey Way perform on Saturday Night Live and like oh my god they really rocked! I think they should’ve been the whole show! Like, can you believe how good they sounded, and those matching jackets were simply to die for. They were like little soldier men, or nutcrackers like in that ballet. At least, that’s what I thought of when I first saw them. But those costumes were pale colored, and these were black with yellow or gold, so I guess it didn’t really match. Silly me. I swear Gerard looks so great with his blonde hair that I don’t even miss the black. Has he put on weight? It looked like he was getting a stomach. And didn’t he just look all Malcolm McDowell from A Clockwork Orange in his close ups? Like he could break in and violate me any time he wanted, like totally fer shure…

Sorrow 3 years ago

What is it about tv or movies that makes them able to connect with you on an emotional level? I was watching a taped episode of The Young And The Restless from a few weeks ago tonight. I knew that the writers were killing off the John Abbott character. I’d started watching this show in 1979 or 1980 during breaks from school. There was a character named Todd Williams on it, and that’s what sucked me in along with Victor Newman holding his wife’s lover captive in the basement and feeding him a dead rat.

Anyway, I knew when the episode started that John Abbott was going to die, but as the family gathered and prayed, then said their goodbyes, I started to cry. I think I connected so much with it because my grandfather looked a lot like the actor who played John, and his last days were in a hospital too. I remember vividly saying my goodbye to him, and everything that happened in those last minutes.

So what is it that can make a tv show trigger your emotions? And how do I make it stop?

Underwear-clad Thief Steals Cash, Fudge from Candy Store

By Rawan Jabaji, Court TV
Fri Aug 4, 5:02 PM ET

(Court TV) – When a burglar raided a Kansas candy store, police say, he chose a unique disguise: A pair of tighty-whities on his head.

“We jokingly called them panty goggles,” said Prairie Village Police Captain Wes Jordan.

“It was a cheap disguise, but it worked.”

Surveillance video shows a brief-clad thief busting through the door, ransacking the cash register and grabbing the fudge.

Police say Bryan Schoonover, 32, broke into Laura’s Little Candies in Prairie Village, Kansas, through a side door on July 21, 2006.

“There were footprints all over the door,” said candy shop manager Fred Prez. “He kicked the door in and then pushed the refrigerator blocking it.”

Looking through one of the underwear’s leg holes, with the other on top of his head, Schoonover made his way to the register and took $160 from the drawer.

On his way out, Schoonover allegedly stopped by the fudge counter and took two slabs of chocolate pecan fudge worth approximately $70.

Because the burglary was so brief, Prez thinks the fudge thief was probably familiar with the shop, and maybe even the candy.

“I assume he was a customer because he knew the store layout,” Prez said. “Maybe he bought some candy before and liked the fudge.”

Prairie Village police arrested Schoonover on July 29, 2006, more than a week after the burglary, after they accompanied police from a neighboring jurisdiction to the home of Schoonover’s girlfriend to discuss another criminal matter with him.

There, Jordan said, Prairie Village police found “multiple items of evidence” related to the burglary. Jordan wouldn’t disclose the recovered evidence, but referred to them as “fruits of the crime.”

“As they started to ask questions, we started to ask questions, too,” said Jordan. “So we were able to put the icing on our investigation.”

Schoonover was arrested and charged with burglary and theft.

According to Jordan, Schoonover had just been released from prison in May for burglary.

But although Schoonover may be a “seasoned criminal,” as Jordan described him, police believe this was his first time using briefs as a disguise.

“I think they were a juvenile pair of underwear,” said Jordan, “because they were a good fit.”

Family Reunion 3 years ago

Every year for the past 63 years, the Laver family has gotten togheter on July 4th. This year we’re doing it on Presque Isle in Erie, PA. My cousin Kim and her husband are the hosts. It’s fun to see some of the family, but there’s a whole bunch of family members that I don’t really know since I only see them here once a year. I’d been family secretary/treasurer the last four years but turned over the books last year after the elections. (I’d hosted last year’s gathering too.)

Does anyone else have family reunions like this that have been going on for that long?
