i learned enough to get by this year and i’ve enjoyed learning korean, but i know that once i get home i’ll have no commitment to keep at it. there’s no real reason for me to other than for fun- but i’ve got a lot of things to keep me entertained, so i think this is the end.

I had just about given up on learning Korean. The truth is, you can get around somewhat easily in Korea without having to know it. But then, a friend of mine started teaching classes to all us wayguks and I find myself much more interested in learning it now. It is hard, but fun.
So, the class that I’ve been going to focuses heavily on reading and writing, which is all fine, but the biggest thing for me is to be able to speak Korean. Reading would also be useful, but I can’t think of a reason why I might need to write it. Also, the class is taught by someone who doesn’t speak English, so it’s hard to understand why certain things are they way they are. Honestly, I’m learning a lot more from the book I have. If only I would use it more…
You’d think living in a country would be enough motivation to learn a new language, but, alas, another week has gone by and Korean class is this afternoon and I’ve not studied a bit!
Learning Korean is slow going and difficult, but also a lot of fun. After 2 weeks of class and I am begining to be able to read Hangul, though very slowly. My Korean friends all tell me that my pronunciation is very good. This is encouraging!
