Applied for a Job

I’ve got an engineering degree, but I was never too crazy about engineering. I’ve been a stay at home mom for 6 years, and I love being able to volunteer at school, see the school Halloween costume parade, take the kids to the beach at noon on a Wednesday in summer, etcetera. The idea of going back to work full time has always seemed like dooming my kids and myself to misery. But last week I actually saw an engineering job advertised that made me feel excited about going back to work and I put in an application. I might not get the job, but my four year old will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and at the very least this is a first step towards adjusting to the idea of being a working mom again.

Chicago

My kids and I visited my sister in Chicago and went to the Museum of Science and Industry, which was very interesting. I liked the coal mine best, while the kids liked the Toymaker 3000 best. We also went to Margie’s Candies, an old time candy and ice cream shop and had humongous sundaes with the most delicious hot fudge sauce I’ve ever tasted. Good fun and bonding was had by all.

Well, this is just a little thing...

But I went to my highschool reunion football game – I didn’t go to the actual reunion cause the hubby was working that night and I didn’t want to go alone. They had an alumni tent at the game and a lot of the people who were in town for the reunion hung out there for the night. I wasn’t sure anyone would remember me since my family moved away from town the year after I graduated and I haven’t been back much since – and it’s been 20 years since I’ve seen most of these people. But they did remember! A bunch of people recognized me right off the bat and we spent the evening reminiscing – it was just really friendly and warm. Plus it was nice being “home” again since that’s the town where I spent my entire childhood. I went with my brother and my kids, and we showed them our childhood homes and schools and ate at our favorite restaurant, which was still there. A very satisfying little outing.
