Read the Big Read's 100 greatest books

I’ve just finished The Colour Purple. Goodness knows why it wasn’t in the top 100, maybe because it is American – and this is a British list – but alas it is languishing in position 136.

Nevertheless, this was a very touching read, I would highly recommend. 8.1 / 10

25. The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien – what can I say. My goodness what an incredibly long time I took to read what was essentially written as a CHILDREN’s book.

I discovered on a plane that version one of the book I owned had a chapter re-printed in the middle of it, not such a tragedy you might think, but it meant another chapter was missed out altogether – and it was an important chapter at that – so I had to abandon my holiday reading plans, and the book on the plane, and pick up where the printers left off when I got home.

My second version was a copy of The Hobbit that my Dad had at school. Dog-eared, and falling to bits it might have been but at least all the words were there. So, onto the story…

I found it soooooo difficult to get into it, and remember which name was for what, and who was who, but persist I did and now I am done, thank goodness, and have a slightly more warmer affection for old Bilbo.

I had every intention of reading Lord of the Rings next, but I need a break from magic and otherwordly creatures. I don’t think Tolkein is really my cup of tea.

I have finished the whole Harry Potter saga, now. And what a good ending – not giving anything away there. Unlike someone who kept telling ‘oh, the last book, that’s where…’ grrrr. And it wasn’t true what they told me, but still button it.

I can get back to my life now – with washing the Everest of dirty clothes that has piled up, cleaning the inches of dust languising in my living room and addressing the diet of pre-packaged food all tackled first and foremost now my Potter challenge is complete.

Well, maybe when I have watched the seven films…

Again, it isn’t on the list, but I finished JK Rowling’s sixth Harry Potter novel a few evenings ago.

This was the hardest not to anything about as the film’s recently out and everytime a trailer came on TV I had to close my eyes, but what a shocker… onto the last book now. Drum roll, please…

83. Holes by Louis Sachar was a quick, but very adorable read. I know there’s a film version, so I kept imagining Shia LaBeouf in the role of Stanley Yelnats, but either way it was a very enjoyable book that kept me on the edge of my seat!

I can’t imagine many parents letting their kids go and live on an island for the summer holidays nowadays, but Swallows and Amazons is from an age where that was possible.

Whilst it’s very much in the ‘tall-ho chaps’ swing of things, it’s a nice children’s book. A bit too much sailing terminology for my liking, but a warm tale none the less and one I can imagine my grandad having read when he was little.

It isn’t on the list, but I finished JK Rowling’s fifth Harry Potter novel last night.

While the book answered some of the mounting mysteries, it was a bit long, and longwinded at times, but the last few chapters got really good and I hope that momentum carries through to the next book – Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Really looking forward to finishing the series, and then watching the films back-to-back.

Yes, yes, yes! I have reached 50 read books now – half way there – I realise the ‘half way there’ statement is a bit redundant now I’ve typed it, but still. The half-way point has been reached before my self-imposed time limit of my birthday too. And it’s my 50th entry about this goal. Spooky. Okay, not really.

So, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – the best yet, by miles, and miles. Quite lengthy at 636 pages, but worth it for the great ending. I can eventually see why everyone raved about JK Rowling now. Okay it wasn’t the most ‘literary’ read, but the storyline’s is gripping, and even a bit scary for kids. Hope the next one is as good…

I had the night off from Harry and co, and read this novella instead. It’s not in the top 100, but is in the top 200 – so if I ever complete this list then it will come in useful for the next stage!

It was a nice read, but not the touching life-affirming fable I was hoping for. 7/10.

Oooh the dementors come into this book… scary. Think this was the best Harry Potter book so far. 8.5/10.

The next book in the series is lying temptingly on my coffee table, but it’s twice as long. I think I need a bit of a break from Hogwarts, but the next book is in the top 5. Decisions, decisions.
