i think this is going on hold for the winter. there’s not much left but apples and squash. luckily i’ve got some local broccoli and tomatoes and corn in the freezer

i’ve been positively awful about this for the last two weeks! now that it’s the end of the season, i’ve really got to go and grab all those ugly tomatoes, oversized eggplants, and take all my plastic containers and freezer bags out of the cupboard and freeze stuff like crazy before the harvest is over!!
Now that I’ve got a handle on the local fruits and vegetables, I’m making a foray into the world of local milks, cheese, meats, and wines.
Some foods that taste completely different (and better) eaten local and fresh:
grapes (you’d be surprised)
zucchini
tomatoes
potatoes
milk (from grass fed cows)
I’ve also become quite enchanted with the Finger Lakes wines.
I’ve decided to just not eat tomatoes out of season anymore, unless they’re something I’ve personally frozen or otherwise preserved. Winter tomatoes are just too gross, and summer tomatoes are just too good. My acid reflux often precludes me from enjoying tomatoes, so I’m just going to enjoy the really good ones, and let the memory carry me through the rest of the year.
today i bought:
new potatoes
spring onions
rhubarb
rainier cherries
heirloom tomatoes
heirloom bell peppers
sweetcorn
3 heads of baby lettuce
basil
i find that with fresh local produce, I tend to eat it much faster because it tastes so much better. you can cut it all up and just eat it all raw in a salad without any seasonings, unlike supermarket produce.
