I’ve struggled with this and here’s some of the solutions I’m trying:

I posted a booklist on Amazon covering all the books I’ve been reading on this topic. It’s titled: Free Yourself From Clutter.

The one I’m reading now is about the psychological reasons for clutter (Making Peace with the Things in Your Life by Cindy Glovinsky).
I hope you find it helpful.
Sometimes I can let go of something if I feel it is going to “a good home.” I hate waste; so using FreeCycle, to pass something on to someone else, liberates me from hoarding.
Here’s how to find one near you:
www.freecycle.org then choose your region from the list.
Here’s how it’s described: “When you want to find a new home for something - whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door - you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group.
Our main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.”
