I’d really like to volunteer abroad this summer. As many reservations as I have about barging into third world countries and “helping” (isn’t this also a form or extension of colonialism?), it sure seems better than doing nothing.

The only thing is that volunteering in such circumstances isn’t exactly free labor; it’s funneling thousands of dollars for the privilege of providing free labor. I have a heart; I just hate how I have to back it up with money—which I sort of have, but not enough to spend exhorbitantly.

Perhaps really vague/lofty goals are merely a cop-out.
