but I had a hard time just figuring out if I even watched 10 of the movies released in 2005! Half of the films that came to mind (yes, films are different than movies, and they come to mind first) were quickly revealed to be from 2004 – or prior.
I didn’t watch a ton of 2004’s movies either, but most of the ones I did see were worth highlighting (I’ve marked whether I saw them on DVD or on the big screen – rest assured that if they’re marked “DVD” they are also invisibily marked “near-ridiculous delayed-reaction viewing”).
2004 Movies I Saw That Are Top 10 WorthyEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (DVD)

The Notebook (big screen)
Maria Full of Grace (DVD)

Don’t worry, I have been instructed to remedy the missing of Dogville, The Corporation, I Heart Huckabees, and Super Size Me and do plan to oblige. There are a bunch of other great indie ones I meant to see, so I guess I will basically spend 2006 watching the films of 2004 not covered so far.
Meanwhile, here’s what I did manage to see of the mostly dreck-ridden year-gone-by… and, just to confuse matters further, they’re listed in chronological reverse order of watching.
2005 Movies I Saw. Period. Only 8. So I can’t make a Top 10 list.March of the Penguins (DVD)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (big screen)
Shopgirl (big screen)
Me and You and Everyone We Know (DVD)
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (DVD)
The Upside of Anger (DVD)
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (big screen)
Hitch (big screen)
I know, I know, I look like The Queen Movie-Skipper of all Slackerdom. I had to use movieweb.com just to find out what was released in the last year. But in my defense, I was busy creating my thesis production since May and in rehearsals 5 days a week since September. Looking through the 2005 titles, I must say I am hard-pressed to find much sorely missed cinematica. I was supposed to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Rent, and Walk the Line, but I never managed to see any of them – which is pretty weird because two of those came out after my show was over, but I was in a total stupor for awhile which maybe explains why I wasn’t even sure how to go about this exercise to begin with… yes, I have officially checked out of pop culture... ;-)
Hence and wherefore, if you’d be so kind to let me know what stirring indie releases did slip through my cracks, my DVD player would greatly appreciate it. Just no comments on the cracks themselves, super glue fixes ev-rything.
