Sloppy from the outset

I first picked up a guitar when i was at college but over the last few years it has drifted out of my life due to other commitments.
When i first started to study the guitar i just wanted to be able to bash out a few tunes by my favourite bands, so i just learned the chords i needed to know and a few leads and that was it. I never progressed past that point and my playing was/is still sloppy.
This time around i intend to take my time and build strong technique coupled with knowledge of music theory and note reading.
