My dad offered me a laptop this weekend. He says he’s fixing it up and then he’ll give it to me. Apparently it’s a few years old, and his company got rid of it for some reason. There are a few problems with this.
Problem 1: I’m happy that he’s fixing up a laptop for me. I mean, sure, a laptop is nice. But technically, I already have a laptop. I have two actually. Both are hand-me-down’s, and when I got them they were already outdated by two generations. Now they’re ancient pieces of history.
Problem 2: The second problem arises out of the first: there’s a reason my dad’s company got rid of them, and it’s not just that they’re too old. With any computer my dad has given me, there’s always been some hardware or software problem, which my dad fixes, but it always either resurfaces or leads to more problems.
Problem 3: The laptop my dad is fixing up has Windows XP (a generation behind the modern-day OS, Vista). It also doesn’t have wireless internet capabilities or a webcam. All of these things are things I wanted on a laptop. I guess I just wanted something that was technologically up-to-date (with my dad in the job field that he is, you wouldn’t think it would be too hard, but all my life I’ve been behind) for once.
Solution: I’m going to have to tell my dad to not waste his time on an early graduation present, but instead save up his money until the REAL graduation, June 6, when he can at least finance part of my laptop. I’ll pay the rest, as long as I have something nice and new for college. I don’t want to be selfish or anything, but this is important to me.
