Another option to books or buying a cd course might be to start with some free web resources. I found a cool site that along with having a good curriculum to study, also sends newsletters to your email address.

The newsletter has cultural notes, false cognates, and Spanish proverbs (I.E. No puede la fortuna quitar lo que no dio. – Fortune cannot take
from us that which she has not already given.)
Not that I won’t eventually invest in a good quality cd course, or even take classes at the local university, but for right now… free is good.
