I fiddled around with cross country a bit in high school, always dropping out after a couple of races in the Kansas sun of August. The fastest two-mile time I ever ran was 11:58. It’s not a particularly good time for a high school athlete, but for someone my age it wouldn’t be too bad. My goal is to go a bit farther and keep that pace for a 5K.
I realized this month that the 25-year anniversary of that 11:58 race would be sometime in fall 2007. So I really want to complete this goal next year.

I’m not going to train specifically for this goal until spring 2007. Until then I’m trying to just get in runs 3x a week. This will be an improvement over last year and hopefully give me a head start.

To be more specific, I want to run a 5K with a 6:00 mile split. My best so far is about 6:45. I think the key is going to be running during the cold months. Every year I take about six months or more off and then I have too far to go to get back in shape.
