learn to repair guitars

On Monday night I talked with Miles, the owner of FretWorks in Calgary. He’s the one who runs the guitar repair school I want to attend. He gave me a reading list to work on, and we talked for half an hour or so about the training, business, etc. Seems like a great person to learn from. I won’t be attending until next summer, but I’m glad to get the ball rolling early; I really think I could become passionate about this job.

Today I emailed the owner of a guitar repair shop in Alberta, Canada who offers 3-month intensive courses in guitar repair. I missed his return call, but I’ll try him again tomorrow. The tuition is pretty steep (9K for 3 months!) but the training is a lot more intense than other programs I’ve looked at – so I get a lot more “bang for my buck,” so to speak. The soonest I would do it is next summer. I’m going to be living in the UK for 9 months or so; I’ll have to do it after I get back. Still, I can’t think of many better things to do with my student loan money! :)
