Welcome to sailing the farm-coop “Project Sailing to Middle Kingdom”
Im building me a 12 meter double ender pilot cutter in
clinker/lapstrake welded 5081 Aluminium alloy with 8 mm (0.312”) in
hull and 6mm (0.25”) in deck. The design a is a copy of the Colin Archer CA-108/109 from 1906.
The boat will be built and equipped for sailing in all regions. The
project is based on shared cost, ie those who contribute in
construction will get priority when choosing crew.
There will be 6 bunks onboard and I will try to have 6 people on most
of the legs. Plan is to have equal opportunity for both
male/females.
- Departure Europe autumn 2010 if everything goes as planned.
- The boat is in construction now and should be ready for ETD after a
shakedown cruise to check that everything runs smoothly.
- The route is not decided yet, boat will be equipped for sailing in
polar region so basically there is nothing who can stop me from
sailing NE-passage, except time of planning and paperwork. Ill see
what i manage to do. But basically there are 2 routes to China if I
decide to sail due east: South of Africa or through the Med.
- Ive put aside late 2010-2011 for sailing and will try to break the
journey up in different parts (which is a part of the plan)
- Cost: Its based on shared cost and contribution. People who
contribute in the process of building will just pay for running cost
based on how much time they have been helping. But Ill try to keep
the cost low while sailing. (approx 100-150 Chinese RMB pr day)
Crew dont need any sailing experience from before, but of course will
be an advantage. Its more important to manage to adapt to the life at
sea. Everyone onboard contribute to run the boat and share all
work. Watch-routine is normally 4-6 hours with 2 people awake at all
time.
The Captain has extensive sailing experience, including solo saling
across atlantic northern route (south of Greenland). Security is
taking seriously and there will be security drilling before extensive
journeys.
Work which need to be done.
- welding out restof hull. (around 100-200 hours)
- turn boat and weld deck and frames (200-300 hours)
- installering av motor/elektrisk (200 timer)
- sew sailing (200 hours)
- interior
- rigging mast (100 hours)
the boat is located on a small farm and Its easy to get here
by train. There are beds available on the farm. Work is from monday
to friday (8-10 hours a day). Saturday/Holiday is holidays.
