The New Year’s resolution may actually work this time. I am now a non-smoker. I am irritable and antsy, but otherwise feeling much better. The patch is working. I’ll be back in a week to say I’m still not smoking.

I have been a smoker for about 11 years. In fact, I’m smoking as I write this. Quitting smoking is the first step to achieving all of my goals; I’ve tried several times, but it’s so darned hard. I am going to try again on New Year’s day (I know you’re not supposed to do that, but it’s better motivation than anything else, I find.) Here’s to a smoke-free 2008!
Intellectually, I understand how deadly cigarettes are; I already have a difficult time breathing on a short walk, and consequently I have very little energy. They alienate me (a little) from my family and some of my friends. I remember well and yearn for the days when I was smoke-free and healthy. I know I have to take that first step, and show some uncharacteristic committment.
I will quit smoking. It is absolutely necessary. I don’t want to die because of some crutch.
