How I did it: I thought about it for a long time, researching their diet, health, everything that they'd need to be healthy and happy. This was largely from a website called Fancy-Rats.co.uk, which is a brilliant source of information and has an adoption forum too. When I'd finally decided it was what I wanted to do, I waited until there were three male rats who needed a home, and I put my name forward. I picked them up from London and the rest is history! How to volunteer in a charity shop

How I did it: I stopped in a local shop and asked for an application form - simple as that. Filled it in, got a reference, handed it back and waited for them to verify all my details, which took three weeks. Now I go in once or twice a week - chat with other volunteers, drink tea, sort clothing, clean things, tag and label, serve customers. I really enjoy it. Read how I did it…

It's going to be a hare 9 months ago

Now to spend the next few months sketching, designing, choosing a placement and shopping around for a good place to go!

I’m thinking of a dark-brown colour for the hare, quite realistic rather than abstract, placement on the back of my calf. It’s still early stages, but it’s great fun.

Got it! 11 months ago

It cost £30, was done – prep, drawing on, tattoo itself, paying – in under half an hour. Fantastic work from the friendly artist Pinky at Cosmic Tattoo, Colchester. (Who has awesome hair.)

Placement – chest
Pain – of course, but honestly nothing to worry about
Would I do it again? YES.
