We don’t have a scale in our dorm, so I have no idea how much I weigh, but since moving to Israel in August I’ve lost at least an inch and a half off my waist.

I love all the needle arts, and practice quite a few of them, so when I saw a woman wanting to expand her silk-weaving business, I had to help out:
I woke up this morning suffering an attack of pollen, so I haven’t done any quilting today. I’ll still finish the Navy quilt tonight, but everything else will have to wait til tomorrow.

The Navy quilt will be finished tomorrow, and probably the Army quilt as well. The fairy tale quilt I’ll probably get to the day after tomorrow. Three things to put in my shop by the end of the week!

I’m going to grad school in a foreign country, so pretty much the only means I’ll have of making money is to sell my quilts and other needle-art projects on Etsy.
When I start grad school in the fall, I’ll be studying Hebrew full-time (it’s a requirement at the Israeli school I’m going to), and if I don’t achieve a certain level of familiarity with the language by my second year, I won’t be able to continue at the school. I’ve always wanted to learn a second language, and it’s exciting to finally study one in-depth in it’s home country.
I opened an Etsy shop ages ago. I have three quilts almost finished that I’m planning to sell, and I recently got an idea for some other items to sell. I just need to do it!
I played violin for my middle school orchestra for 3 years, but neither of the highschools I went to after that had orchestras, so I stopped playing. I still have my violin, but haven’t been able to take lessons since middle school. I learned recently that the graduate school I’m attending this year will be starting a partnership with a local music school, where grad students can take private lessons. Hopefully I can work this to my advantage!
My parents are getting ready to move to Tajikistan, which shares its eastern border with China. We’re hoping that while I’m visiting my parents (maybe next summer), we’ll be able to take a trip to Tibet.

I wanted to spread the word about a charity I support, called Modest Needs. Modest Needs has a similar approach to helping people as Kiva: if someone needs help (say with rent, unexpected medical costs, etc) they apply for consideration, and Modest Needs (after checking the veracity of their claims) posts their applications online. Then, as with Kiva, you can decide how much you want to donate to that particular person. Modest Needs always sends the money straight to whomever it is owed to (landlord, hospital, bank, etc), so you know the money is going to where it’s supposed to be.
Their mission statement:
“-To prevent otherwise financially self-sufficient individuals and families from entering the cycle of poverty, when this might be avoided with a small amount of well-timed financial assistance;
-To restore the financial self-sufficiency of individuals who are willing to work but are temporarily unable to do so because they do not have the means to remit payment for a work-related expense;
-To empower permanently disadvantaged individuals who otherwise live within their limited means to continue to live independently, despite a temporary, unexpected financial set-back; and
-To strengthen small non-profit organizations by providing a forum whereby such organizations can apply directly to the general public for the help they need to complete the relatively inexpensive projects that will allow them to better serve their clients and the communities they exist to serve.”

Registered for the con, and the Saturday night banquet; looking at plane tickets, and I’ve found a handful of affordable places to stay; decided to stay a few days after the con ends to do touristy stuff around AZ and visit with an old friend. Can’t wait!
At the end of one of his books, Terry Pratchett had a note that he left out a lot of what he learned about rats because he didn’t think people would believe it was true. That made me wonder about them.

This was mentioned in a fantasy/alternate history book, and I want to know if it really happened, and if it did, what was it about.
