Whoa, I haven’t posted in over a year?! That is a long time. Well, progress is slow but good. I think it’s safe to say that Santa Monica isn’t always that good. But it’s OK. I am still committed to this goal. In the summer I go every week-end and in the winter it tends to turn in to a monthly deal due to weather, conditions and travels.
What has changed since my last entry is my board. I have been blessed with a custom Jule Collection board. Sometimes I feel silly to have such a pristine board, but I worked very hard to earn it and I absolutely love it. It’s a 9’2” Emerald. And the difference from the soft top is insane. Now I know what people mean when they talk about the way a board handles.
On my Surftech soft top, if I started pearling, it was over. On my Jule, I just lean back and pop up, and the nose comes back up. Turning (the tiny bit I do), is a breeze.
My main point for this post is that if you are starting out, think long and hard before you buy a soft top. Get a “cheap” glass board or epoxy board. To me, the soft top was a no-brainer because of my fear. She made me comfortable, and it was the only way I would get in the water, period. But I am the ultimate wuzz. I haven’t met anyone with my fear level (or they just hide it really well). But had I known what a difference there was between boards, I would have gone for a glass board a lot sooner. Because of my experience, my girlfriend borrowed my soft top for a couple of sessions, and then got a glass board. Her experience is the same. Glass is the way to go.
I am biased. I think all women should surf Jule Collection boards. They sparkle for crying out loud! But they truly are amazing boards, shaped by Jed Noll.
