First, I must have mercy on Bob. That might just be the hardest part, for a cynic such as myself. I know my motives are not pure. But what if what I think does not matter, but rather what I do? Or even more telling, what results is what matters to most onlookers: What did he do? The action is gone, what remains is the result. Did he do well? Is he at peace with himself and others? DOes he yet understand?

Located atop Lookout Mountain, just 6 miles from downtown Chattanooga, Rock City is a tourist trap, and since it is close to where I was born, and near where I was raised, it is almost impossible not to bring it to mind when someone asks “What do you want to do?” because “See Rock City” was ubiquitous in Norte Alabama in the 50’s and 60’s on what seemed like every barn roof for miles around. It is sort of cool, in an acrophobia generated sort of rush…but I have been there many times, and I will go again, but it is coming off of the list.
I am happy to report the modest achievement of breaking through another decade as I march the triple beam down from my chubby high of 239 to a much slimmer 218 and counting. Twenty pounds, and my blood pressure (B.P.) is lower, my clothes are looser, and I feel better. One of the under-appreciated benefits of (even mild) exercise is a feeling of well-being, a sort of generally good feeling. I am not talking about “hitting the wall” or any endomorphene rush, but I am talking about a feeling of competence, of taking care of oneself, of empowerment, even. All of this from simply twenty-five minutes of walking briskly, covering a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half, and a few crunches. I recommend it.
