Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Slow week (180.5 down 12.5 lbs)

This week seemed to go well, but the scales only went down 1 lb. Could be a measurement error or something else, so not going to worry about it. It’s still down.

Another good week, bad weekend (181.5, down 11.5 lbs)

I was very strict in the week and ok on Saturday, but then had a very large lunch on Sunday. Friends were over and my wife’s banoffee pie kept jumping into my mouth.

But, 2 lbs off is good so I got a bit lucky.

Also nice to be below my “wedding weight”, which was 11 years ago. Off to New York for a week in two weeks time, so I would like to get to 178 or so by then.

Good week, bad weekend (183.5 down 9.5 lbs)

Had a great week eating well and lightly, but then blew it a bit at the weekend. Started badly when I realised I had a work breakfast and work lunch on Friday, but had a light dinner to compensate. But then my wife made a very nice chocolate tart which was hard to resist. A strict day yesterday has unwound some of the weekend badness, and I lost 3 lbs over the last 8 days which is pretty surprising. Would like to get under 182 by nxet Tuesday, which was the weight I got married at (11 years ago).

Couple more pounds 186.5 (down 6.5 lbs)

A good week and not so good weekend meant I am down 2 lbs for the week. I was down 3 before the weekend, but was visiting in-laws and ate poorly.

Hoping to keep doing 2 lbs a week and so should get to a good place by Christmas.

On my way 188.5 (down 4.5 lbs)

Dropped a few pounds since the start of this challenge. Averaged about 2 lbs a week for the first two weeks. I’ve been trying to eat very lightly in the week, and giving myself a bit more leeway at the weekend. In particular, I have been eating a lot of cooked vegetables as I cannot stand feeling hungry, and they fill you up for a few hours. A microwave pack of fresh vegetables from the supermarket is 100 calories and very easy to prepare.

Five more weeks until I go to New York for a week of work, and then two more weeks until Christmas. I’d like to drop 10 lbs or so before NY. Aside from eating light, I am lifting twice a week.

Back again - 193 lbs

Frustratingly back at a heavy weight and need to lose. I am going for 7 weeks of light eating to try and get rid of some weight. I don’t expect to do 30 pounds in that time, but hope to make a good start, perhaps half way. This was as at 15th October 2012

178.5...28.5 pounds down

Gaa – I thought I was going to get there this week, then I put on half a pound! Three barbeques in four days may be the reason why…although I did have a whole day of exercise on a summer outing (golf, football, volleyball, from 10am to 5pm), and my Tanita scales actually state that I lost 2.5 poounds of fat and gained three pounds of muscle this week. So not as bad as it seems and I need to be patient.

179...29 pounds down

A pretty good week and I am almost there. I had a slight blip Sunday when my sister had me over for dinner, and thrust two outstanding desserts onto the table, but I had little else that day, so didn’t do too much damage.

182.5...25.5 pounds down

Just got back from a week in Italy. I decided to eat very lightly on the way out and way back (i.e. no awful plane food), which despite the ridiculous number of pizzas and ice creams I ate, seems to have worked, as I lost another 1.5 pounds over the last two weeks. I expected to go up. The end is hopefully in sight now.

184...24 pounds down

Managed to get rid of another few pounds. Holiday on Saturday for a week, so hoping not to reverse my progress whilst away. Going to need a lot of will power. Hopefully I can achieve this goal at the end of June or early July.

188...20 pounds down

Phew – tough week as cake was coming my way left, right and centre, but I resisted most of it, then stuck hard to my guns over the weekend, and ended up losing three pounds over the week. Now two thirds of the way there. Holiday in two weeks time, so it would be nice to lose a bit more before then. It will also be a challenge to not put it all back on with amazing Italian cuisine…

191...17 pounds down

I ate well this week but was still quite surprised to find I’d lost three pounds. Especially after eating quite a bit of chocolate tort on Sunday – my wife force fed me two quite large bits. This week’s challenge is to not eat lots of cakes. It’s an office bake off this week, and so everyone is bringing in home made cakes and desserts. I ate none of my own cheesecake I made yesterday (thankfully everyone else wolfed it down). There will be some nice things this week though I’m sure – I have to make sure I don’t stall my weight loss, so must be firm.

194...14 pounds down

Had a good start to the week, then a bad finish. Kind of pigged out on Friday, although on mostly ok foods. I also was away at the weekend at my friends, who proceeded to stuff me with their desserts. However, I was strict yesterday, and ended up 1 pound down for the week. Almost half way there.

I went to my in-laws anniversary recently, which was a long weekend away from home. I was worried I would put on weight, but actually managed to lose four pounds! I fasted a bit, then limited the treat eating to just the one party day. I’m feeling pretty confident about achieving this goal now. I have a holiday in Italy in a month’s time, and need to make sure I have lost more weight before then, but also limit the damage when I am there!

199...9 pounds down

A slowish week – started well, then had a couple of bad days towards the end and the weekend – my wife made a superb banoffee pie on Sunday for a lunch with family, and I appear to have scoffed quite a lot of it. Still – a pound down is not bad, and I am going to try and have a good week. Tough weekend approaching though, as I am travelling to my in-laws for their 40th wedding anniversary. I’ll need to watch myself that weekend.

200...8 pounds down

Foolish to post yesterday, as I weigh myself weekly on Tuesdays. However, I adiosed another two pounds this week. Happy with that. Eight pounds down now is a good start, and I am feeling optimistic of getting down to a good weight.

202...6 pounds down

Managed to lose weight over a normal week, and stay flat over Easter, which is ok progress. Now I need to step it up. I think on my non-fasting days I am slightly overdoing it with dairy – I love those heavy cheeses. So I am going to add more meat in and remove some or all of the dairy.

A week in [204...4 pounds down]

OK, it’s really two weeks in, but I didn’t do anything the first week, in fact, I put on a pound. I had a semi-bad weekend, but erased the badness with a fast on Monday. Nice to adios the first few pounds and get going on this. Key thing now is to keep up the pressure for another few weeks, so I lock in the habits. It’s easy, especially for me, to have a flurry of activity, lose a few pounds, then give up.

Fasting days are surprisingly easy. Can be a temptation to think it’s ok to binge the following day. I haven’t eaten right now for 37 hours, yet I don’t feel hungry. I have a friend’s wedding in a week and a half, and it would be nice to lose a few more pounds before then. I think 196 is going to be a good psychological barrier for me, as that is 14 stone. I always feel very overweight when over 14 stone. My goal is to be 12 stone (168), which feels slim to me, although this target I have set is to go to 178 (just under 13 stone). The idea of being under 13 stone again makes me excited.

Getting started

I found writing about this goal useful when I did it in 2008, successfully. Sadly, after my second baby was born, I put on lots of weight. Should be my wife who did that, not me! I plan to try and lose it the way I did before, which is controlling strictly what I eat early in the day, then eating low carb foods in the late afternoon and evening. I will throw a day of fasting in also once a week. Plenty of meat and vegetables, eggs, etc in my meals. I also need to plan nearer the time how I go on after I have done it, as I really messed up when I lost weight before by reverting to my previous style. A bit of discipline for a few weeks will get me going, I find momentum is a good thing. Normally, if I fail, I fail in the first week or two.

Touching distance 175 (Start - 19 pounds)

Almost there. After a slow week, my body seemed to catch up in the last few days and I’m now just a pound away. This despite eating my wife’s tasty pie and mash dinner in the evening.

In addition, with my second child due any day now, it would be good to adios the last pound before I get caught up in sleepless nights, no exercise and takeaways….
