95% of people walk down from the south rim, after all it’s 1000 feet lower elevation, if you like walking with less people start at the north rim! You will have a choice of two very nice campgrounds on the way down.(you have to make reservations) I stayed at the second, left my sleeping bag there, and walked to the river and back, stayed a second night then walked out the next morning.
No I don’tmean just walking to the mouth of the narrows, busloads of people do that every day! Walk the whole thing from the top to the mouth and out. There are less than 100 days a year that the water is low enough and the thunderstorm risk is low enough that they open the whole narrows to hikers. Go tothe visiters center and check, if it’s open, make reservations, you may have to wait 2-3 days becouse they only allow about 30 people a day to start. It realy is a two day hike, so reserve a campsite mid canyon, get a strong walking stick. (you’ll need it) wear an old pair of tennis shoes and bag everything in plastic. you also are well advised to have the people at the lodge drive you to the starting site. The road is terrible andit would be easy to get lost going there. It will be a walk you will remember, a true western classic
