Circle one: Here we see the symbol of the earth on top of the sign for the sun. That state symbolizes chaos: matter is given predominance over god.
Circle two: The divine spirit starts to penetrate matter.
Circle three: This sign symbolizes that the spirit has succeeded in penetrating matter. It is the alchemic symbol for mitrum, the gaseous substance nitrogen.
Circle four: At this stage matter has become etherealized or spiritualized. This sign is alchemy’s symbol for salt, the substance that pereates, cleanses, and conservers matter.
Circle five: The sun cross denotes that mater is totally permeated by the spirit.
Circle six: Here life, having been made totally spiritualized or made conscious, starts retracting from matter. Man now is separating himself from the animal world.
Circle seven: This sign is a symbol for the rise of the human soul to higher states of consciousness.
Circle eight: This part of the chain represents man’s attainment of eternal life. He can no longer sink into the unconsciousness that characterizes matter.
Circle nine: Here matter, having become less essential for man, symbolically returns to its primordial state, it’s state before the arrival of man.
Circle ten: When the earth is finally and totally subject to god/spirit, total consciousness or perfection has been attained. Man has returned to god. This state of man is closely linked to quinta essentia, the fifth element, and the coniunctio, man’s merging with god.
