So last summer was a bit of a wash-out work-wise. Spent ages filling in applications for rubbish shop assistant jobs and took interviews that went nowhere. This summer the boyfriend came through in a big way & gave me ten hours a week where he works. Hurray for dating a manager! I do one 10-hour day a week which won’t exactly make me a millionaire but gives me some money so I won’t be eating into my savings over the summer.

Today I bought myself some floss (first time ever!), some mouthwash and a battery-operated toothbrush. We all know we should use these three things but I’ve never managed to even buy them until today! They’re sitting on my windowsill in the bathroom, ready to use tonight. I’m excited! I’m also seeing my dentist in under a week, we’ll see what he thinks of the old pearly whites…
I realise that this is one of those goals that never really gets completed, but over the past year I think I’ve made such improvement that I’m allowed to cross it off my list.
I’ve spent a year in Russia, struggling to be understood in my second language. The first semester was difficult; unnatural, upsetting and lonely. The second semester saw me travel through the Baltic states, on my own for half my journey. I spoke English and Russian depending on what people spoke. I tried to learn a few words of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian. I tried places that weren’t in the guidebook.
And now? Back home in England, I can walk up to anyone, ask anything, take awkward phonecalls meant for someone else, jump on a new bus route and not care if I end up in the wrong place.
Learning to live as a foreigner in a strange country has given me the confidence to do… whatever I want! Sure, I still have reservations, but I’m totally okay with putting them to the side and diving in head first.
I’m loving my new lease of life. Bring on the next challenge!
