How I did it: Reading through my entries is probably the best "how to" I could write. However, I'll summarize here. I was invited to participate in the Women Extreme Team's Denali wilderness bike ride. This is an approx. 150 mile ride through the Denali wilderness. It basically follows the Paxton to Cantwell Denali Highway -an all gravel road with the second highest summit (4000+) in Alaska and heavily hilled. It was a brutal ride, deeply challenging e… Read how I did it…
How I did it: We called up a halibut charter in Homer, Alaska, haggled for a decent price and booked a trip for six people on a fairly large boat. We showed up at the harbor at 5:30 am, handed over our fishing licenses and boarded the boat. Headed out of the harbor and cruised to a spot about an hour out. It was overcast and cool, but not the usual freezing and raining - which we deeply appreciated. We got our "how-to" lecture from the Captain and away… Read how I did it…
How I did it: We have wanted to go clamming at Clam Gulch (Kenai Peninsula, Alaska) for some time. Since we were driving through en route to a halibut charter, we thought we'd stop and take advantage of a low tide. We bought clam shovels and brought a bucket to collect our clams. The tide ended up not being sufficiently low to expose the clam beds. We were only able to find one clam. But we still had fun looking and digging even if the clams remained s… Read how I did it…

I’ve slacked off on this one. It’s so easy to start coasting when you’re really near a goal. I look pretty good and so the problem isn’t “in my face” like it was before. BUT…I don’t want to stop short of the prize here. This week I’m going to really double my efforts and see if I can’t finally get this done.
I’m four days behind in reporting on this goal. I”ve practiced 2 hours a day since for another 8 hours towards the thousands needed for mastery. I spent most of that time concentrating on getting better tone from my bowing.
On Monday I had an hour jamming with an accomplished young violinist. I was playing the piano, accompanying her to a piece we will be doing in church in a few weeks. But I brought along my violin and asked her to play it. I wanted an analysis on the quality of the instrument’s tone as I just dont’ seem to be making progress and was wondering how much of the problem might be the instrument. She said the problem lies in the bow. There was an immediate and massive difference in the sound coming from my violin when she used her bow versus mine. She also said my violin has a bad metallic tone to it and some rattling from the box. It’s a cheap student rental.
I cannot afford a quality instrument at this point. My friend told me that a quality bow alone would cost me $300 at least. But it was somewhat comforting to me to have the hope held out that I can get an improvement in tone by simply purchasing better equipment. I will continue to work like it’s ALL my problem and practice diligently. Then when I can afford a better instrument and bow, it will be a very nice morale boost to have an immediate inrprovement in tone.
